Bangkok, Thailand — Ekhbary News Agency

A devastating fire engulfed a beer hall in Bangkok overnight into Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 people and leaving 75 injured, 24 of whom are in critical condition. The blaze, which tore through the Na Ladprao establishment in the city's northern Chatuchak district, quickly overwhelmed patrons and staff, prompting a frantic escape attempt. Firefighters battled the inferno for approximately half an hour before bringing it under control, but the scale of the devastation was immense.

Investigation Focuses on Safety Lapses

Authorities have launched an intensive investigation into the cause of the fire. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt indicated that investigators would scrutinize the building's ceiling materials and assess whether any emergency exits were obstructed, potentially hindering evacuation efforts. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, visiting the charred remains, expressed concern after a firefighter confirmed one exit was "locked with two bolts." A musician performing at the venue reported seeing smoke from a circuit breaker near the stage, followed by a power outage and an explosion, before thick smoke rapidly filled the hall. Many victims, for what it's worth, were discovered near the restrooms at the back, seemingly trapped.

Community Mourns Amid Past Tragedies

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, with Buddhist monks visiting the site to pray for the deceased and nurses distributing face masks to protect residents from lingering fumes. Forensic officers are meticulously combing through the debris, which includes charred televisions and musical instruments, searching for crucial clues. This incident grimly echoes previous such disasters in Thailand; a 2022 fire at a music pub claimed 14 lives, and a 2009 New Year's Eve blaze at the Santika Club killed 66 and injured over 200. The repeated occurrence of such devastating fires underscores an urgent need for stricter safety enforcement across entertainment venues.
