Pokémon World Championships Unveil New Film, Series, and Game Updates

San Francisco recently hosted the 2026 Pokémon World Championships, an event that not only concluded the competitive season but also marked the franchise's 30th anniversary. This year's gathering, which included the inaugural PokémonXP fan event, unveiled a series of major announcements for the expansive Pokémon universe.

New Cinematic and Streaming Adventures Unveiled

Fans can anticipate "Pokémon: Wild Card," the franchise's first new feature-length animated film in years, slated for a 2027 release. Produced by Story inc. and CloverWorks, the movie centers on an aspiring Pokémon Trading Card Game player alongside Mimikyu. Additionally, Aardman’s stop-motion series, "Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd & Pichu," will premiere on Disney+ in 2027, with a teaser trailer debuting during a special panel, proving the creative teams are hard at work.

Game Updates and Collectible Expansions

Significant updates are coming to the gaming world. "Pokémon Champions" introduces Z Mega Evolutions on September 9th, featuring Mega Lucario Z, Mega Garchomp Z, and Mega Absol Z, alongside new additions Baxcalibur and Rillaboom, with more Heatran details promised. The Pokémon Trading Card Game will receive matching Mega attack rare cards, including Mega Rayquaza ex, Mega Darkrai ex, Mega Greninja ex, and Mega Zygarde ex, plus a new ex★ Series. Pokémon TCG Pocket will introduce dual-type Pokémon starting in October. Pokémon Go, celebrating its 10th anniversary, will see a battle overhaul, allowing eligible Mega-Evolved Pokémon a third Charged Attack and universal Go Battle League usability next season. Armoured Mewtwo is also set for a return. Moreover, Pokémon Unite expands its roster with Morpeko, Toxtricity, Jolteon, and Flareon, while five new Lego Pokémon creatures were teased for 2027, though specifics remain under wraps for what it's worth.
