Gallup's latest annual poll reveals a widening public trust gap between nurses and doctors, with nurses consistently topping the list as America's most trusted profession. This finding, observed 25 times since 1999, underscores a unique dynamic within the U.S. healthcare system, it goes without saying.

Nurses: The Heart of Daily Patient Care

Marlo Robinson, Dean of Purdue Global School of Nursing, affirmed that "The doctor is treating the disease. We’re the ones who are with the patients living with the disease." This constant physical and emotional proximity fosters profound trust. In the recent poll, 75% of Americans rated nurses' honesty and ethical standards as "very high" or "high." Doctors, however, garnered only 57%, a significant 20-point drop from their pandemic-era peak.

Divergent Roles Impacting Trust

Theresa Brown, an oncology nurse and author, highlights the distinct scopes of practice. Doctors diagnose, treat, and prescribe, tasks nurses are forbidden from performing. Nurses, conversely, are trained to assess patients in real-time, administer prescribed treatments, monitor complications, and advocate for the individual in bed. This fundamental difference shapes patient relationships.

Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, President of the American Nurses Association, articulated that nurses are "physically and emotionally closer to patients than almost anyone in the system." They are present during moments of fear, pain, and uncertainty, not merely at decision points. While doctors, as Dr. Danielle Ofri noted, dedicate substantial unseen effort to documentation, consulting, and administrative tasks, this behind-the-scenes work often remains invisible to patients, influencing their perception of direct care time.

Ultimately, direct and continuous engagement is pivotal in building patient trust, a hallmark of the nursing role throughout a patient's journey.
