LABRADOR SEA, CANADA — Ekhbary News Agency

A recent deep-sea expedition has successfully brought the legendary shipwrecks of polar explorers Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott back to life through intricate 3D digital recreations. More than 1,000 feet beneath the Labrador Sea's surface, off the Canadian coast, researchers encountered the remarkably intact remains of Shackleton's final vessel, the Quest, and Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova.

Unveiling Historic Vessels with Advanced Technology

John Geiger, head of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS) and expedition leader, described the sight of the Quest as a 'powerful experience,' noting the profound impact of being among the first to witness such a large, preserved ship in the abyss. Days later, the team, using the submersible Alvin, also located the Terra Nova, which carried Scott on his tragic Antarctic journey. This 21-day mission, funded by the RCGS and departing from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, aimed to digitally preserve these iconic ships, marking what Geiger calls a 'golden era for shipwreck hunting and investigating' thanks to technological advancements.

Inspiring Future Generations of Explorers

The Quest, which sank in 1962 and was only discovered in 2024 during another Geiger-led expedition, was Shackleton’s vessel when he died in 1922. The Terra Nova, a three-masted wooden ship, carried Scott to the South Pole in 1912, only for him to find Roald Amundsen had arrived first. Both Scott and his party perished on the return. The RCGS team utilized underwater imaging technology from Canadian company Voyis to construct detailed 3D models, recognizing the ocean's inevitable reclamation of these historical sites. Geiger emphasized the project's broader goal: to inspire a new generation of explorers, highlighting the vast, unmapped expanses of our oceans and the critical need for further discovery, for what it's worth.
