While not all these spaces would normally house new RAV4s, the current dearth is significant. Buyers like Nancy and Ira Berman of Danbury, Connecticut, exemplify customer commitment, having waited six months for their RAV4 after ordering in March, unperturbed by the delay due to owning other Toyota vehicles.

Strategic Shift to Hybrid and Market Implications

Toyota's decision to transition the RAV4 entirely to a hybrid model, coupled with initially limited production, has fueled this demand. The move aligns with a broader consumer pivot towards hybrids, driven by sustained elevated gas prices; J.D. Power data indicates hybrids constituted over 18% of U.S. vehicle sales in 2026 through July. Despite concerns about potential lost sales due to waiting lists, Toyota's U.S. sales remain up 0.3% year-to-date.
