Europe — Ekhbary News Agency

Chinese automaker XPeng unveiled its new "budget" electric vehicle, the L03, at a Munich showcase event, signaling its aggressive global expansion plans. This marks the brand's first worldwide release of an EV, targeting 60 countries across Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific. The launch underscores XPeng's ambition to challenge established automotive giants on their home turf.

Aggressive Pricing and Premium Features

Priced from €35,600 (approximately $41,000), the L03 aims for high-volume sales, positioned below XPeng's G6 model. Despite its "budget" designation, the vehicle boasts impressive specifications, including a claimed WLTP 320-mile range and rapid charging capabilities, achieving 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. Standard features like a panoramic glass roof, heated and cooled massage seats, and a 15.6-inch 2.5K central screen suggest a "beyond class" experience for its segment, challenging competitors such as the Volkswagen ID.4.

Autonomy Ambitions and Hardware Limitations

While top L03 models accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, the base version takes 7.5 seconds. The Ultra variant offers L2++ autonomous driving, with a future over-the-air update expected to enable point-to-point, hands-off navigation in Europe by 2027, powered by XPeng’s Turing 7-nanometer AI chips. However, Xianming Liu, XPeng’s senior director of engineering, confirmed the L03 lacks the necessary hardware for Level 4 autonomy despite its advanced processing capabilities. This limitation means the "budget" EV will not advance beyond L2++ skills. Curiously, XPeng aligns with Tesla in adopting a "no lidar" approach for its autonomous tech, relying instead on boosted compute power and camera systems, a stance that differs from many Chinese rivals. For what it's worth, the interior quality genuinely feels premium, defying its price point.
