British singer Kyla's 2008 garage track, "Do You Mind," has been officially crowned TikTok's UK song of the summer, marking an extraordinary resurgence for the noughties hit. The platform confirmed the song's massive popularity, noting its feature in nearly 650,000 UK videos and generating over 500 million views throughout the summer period. Kyla, who co-created the track with her husband DJ Paleface, expressed her disbelief and joy to BBC Newsbeat, describing the renewed attention as "surreal" yet "incredible" almost two decades later.
A Legacy Rekindled on Stage and Screen
Originally gaining traction upon its release, "Do You Mind" achieved global recognition in 2016 when Canadian rapper Drake sampled it for his chart-topping single "One Dance." This latest wave of popularity on TikTok, as it happens, feels different for Kyla. She previously felt the 2016 success was largely attributed to Drake's involvement, but now perceives this moment as truly her own. Last month, singer Jorja Smith invited Kyla to perform the track live at London's All Points East festival, where an audience of approximately 40,000 people sang along, an experience Kyla found profoundly moving.

Wider Trend: Nostalgia and UK Garage Revival
The track's success highlights a broader trend of nostalgic music finding new audiences and a significant revival of UK garage music, with contemporary artists integrating its sound into their work. Beyond Kyla's achievement, Oasis's 1995 classic "Wonderwall" secured the second spot for UK song of the summer on TikTok, fueled by its role as an unofficial anthem during England's World Cup journey. Globally, Katy Perry's 2011 hit "The One That Got Away" was named TikTok's song of the summer, featuring in over 15 million videos. This phenomenon underscores how older tracks are consistently being reintroduced to new generations through viral trends on the platform.
