Prominent Spanish communicator Risto Mejide recently unveiled intimate details about his childhood, sharing experiences of bullying and the profound impact of his parents during an interview with Jesús Calleja. Known for his sharp wit and distinctive persona, Mejide recounted how early struggles shaped his resilient character, a side rarely seen beneath his iconic glasses and challenging public demeanor.
Early Life and Academic Isolation
Mejide described himself as an "old child," preferring chess over sports and dedicating himself to studies, which, as it turns out, made him a target among his peers. "I was probably the biggest nerd in class because I studied," he confessed to Calleja during their 2017 trip to Cape Town. This introverted nature and his unusual interests for his age quickly made him vulnerable to harassment.

Coping with Bullying and a Mother's Wisdom
The television personality vividly recalled enduring what he termed "la vaca," a cruel form of bullying where classmates would force his legs open and slam him against a lamppost. "That hardened my resolve in every sense," Mejide admitted, explaining how these incidents forged the person he is today. A pivotal moment occurred when his mother, a clinical psychologist, responded to an act of vandalism targeting him with remarkable wisdom. Instead of protecting him, she handed him a red marker and instructed him to "think about what you're going to put underneath tomorrow." The next day, Risto wrote, "Well, deal with it," a powerful act of self-defense that, he believes, fundamentally altered his path. His father, a doctor, also instilled the value of hard work, often toiling tirelessly to fund his education.
A Public Figure's Private Struggles
This candid revelation offers a rare glimpse into the formative experiences behind one of Spain's most distinctive media personalities, highlighting the often-unseen struggles that shape public figures. Mejide’s journey from a bullied child to a celebrated communicator underscores the enduring influence of resilience and parental guidance.
