A woman, identified as Pamela Cisneros, 49, with a documented history of mental illness, was fatally shot by NYPD officers in Times Square on Monday afternoon. The incident unfolded after she stabbed two individuals, one fatally, and subsequently confronted police while brandishing two kitchen knives, threatening their lives.

Violent Stabbings Precede Confrontation

The chaotic sequence began around 4:30 PM near 41st Street and 7th Avenue when Cisneros randomly attacked a 68-year-old man in the abdomen after he exited the subway. She then proceeded to 42nd Street, where she fatally stabbed a 32-year-old woman in the abdomen. These unprovoked assaults, occurring within a 20-second span, sent terrified tourists and pedestrians scrambling for safety. Authorities quickly ruled out any terrorist connections to the attacks.

Officer Confrontation Escalates

Officers located Cisneros a block away, behind a police substation, where she aggressively wielded the knives. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that officers spent four minutes issuing "numerous orders" for her to drop the weapons, but she defiantly refused, stating, "I'm not letting go of anything. I'd rather kill you both. I will kill you." Despite deploying Tasers multiple times, which proved ineffective, Cisneros continued to advance towards the officers. Two officers then opened fire, striking her at close range. She was later pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, bringing a tense 20-minute ordeal to an end. It appears the rapid escalation left officers with limited options.
