Germany and France have commenced practical cooperation on nuclear deterrence, fulfilling a March agreement. The Luftwaffe confirmed joint air refueling exercises involving two French Rafale jets and two German Eurofighters with a French tanker aircraft. This bolsters European defense.

Future Drills and Strategic Decisions

Scheduled for Friday at Nörvenich Air Base, a further exercise will coincide with a Franco-German Defense Council meeting. Soldiers will perform reciprocal aircraft maintenance. German government sources indicate the Council will also approve German soldiers' participation in a French nuclear maneuver this autumn, a first for the Bundeswehr. This initiative, as it happens, directly complements NATO's deterrence strategy.

France's Role and Wider European Interest

France and the UK are Western Europe's sole nuclear powers. While US atomic bombs are in Germany for NATO deterrence, with Bundeswehr jets, France's cooperation offer has also drawn positive interest from countries like Poland, the Netherlands, and Belgium, indicating wider alignment.
