The wearable technology sector is seeing a new entrant focused on health rather than just fitness. Vital Signals is set to launch the Signal Ring later this year, a device designed to offer continuous blood pressure monitoring, a critical feature for individuals managing hypertension. The company's founder, Tom Moss, stated that the ring is intended as a tool to help users avoid emergency room visits, particularly those with existing cardiac conditions.

Revolutionary Health Monitoring

Moss, who has personal experience with severe hypertension, highlighted the lack of accurate, all-day blood pressure monitoring devices. Collaborating with engineers from Masimo, he spent three years developing proprietary algorithms for the Signal Ring. These algorithms reportedly provide unparalleled detail and accuracy, distinguishing it from other wearables that require frequent calibration with a traditional cuff. Users can also take manual readings, with the system guiding them to ensure optimal conditions for accuracy. Contextual data, such as recent activities like exercise or caffeine intake, can be added to help understand blood pressure fluctuations.

Background and Future Prospects

Tom Moss brings a wealth of experience from the tech industry, having been an early member of the Android team and co-founder of Nextbit. He emphasized that the Signal Ring will not feature a monthly subscription fee and will not incorporate AI directly into the device, though data can be exported for external analysis. The company is pursuing regulatory clearance, aiming to integrate the device into preventative care routines and potentially work with insurers. The Signal Ring is available for pre-order at $399, with shipping slated for October. It boasts a three-day battery life and comes with a charging case providing four additional charges.
