Apple recently rolled out a new 36-month financing option for its Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads, appearing at checkout alongside existing payment methods. This initiative, available for various iPad models including the Pro, Air, and mini, aims to reduce monthly outlays for consumers, subject to carrier approval. However, for what it's worth, this extended payment plan does not inherently lower the device's total price.
Carrier and Retailer Alternatives Offer Greater Value
While Apple's interest-free financing through Apple Card remains a 12-month term, the new 36-month option primarily spreads the cost over a longer period. For instance, a $1,399 cellular 11-inch iPad Pro with M5 would cost approximately $39 per month over three years through AT&T or Verizon, excluding cellular service fees. These carriers already provide similar 0% APR tablet financing through their own channels, often bundling promotional credits that effectively reduce the device's price over the term.

Strategic Shopping Essential for Maximum Savings
Customers opting for carrier financing must activate their iPad with the chosen provider and pay for a separate data plan, adding to the real monthly expense. Despite the convenience of buying directly from Apple, a lower device payment doesn't always translate to the cheapest overall option. Savvy buyers should meticulously compare the full three-year cost, factoring in data plans, activation fees, and potential promotional credits. Retailers like Amazon, for example, are currently offering up to $200 off select iPads, with additional 0% financing options for cardholders. At the end of the day, a thorough comparison is crucial to secure the best deal.
