Birds employ various ingenious strategies to survive intense heatwaves, a challenge often overlooked by humans. Lacking sweat glands, birds must rely on alternative physiological and behavioral adaptations to prevent overheating.

Avian Cooling Mechanisms

Seeking refuge under tree canopies, within dense bushes, or along hedgerows offers immediate relief. Birds spread their wings to facilitate air circulation and open their bills, akin to canine panting, for cooling. Pumping blood into bare extremities—bills, legs, and feet—allows efficient heat dissipation. Bathing in natural water sources or provided baths also helps. Yet, congregating for water can increase vulnerability to predators like sparrowhawks and cats.

Food Scarcity for Ground Feeders

Despite these adaptations, prolonged extreme heat still induces stress in avian populations. Ground-feeding species, such as blackbirds and thrushes, face particular difficulties. Hard-baked earth makes finding essential invertebrates like earthworms considerably harder, impacting their food supply. It goes without saying, these creatures demonstrate remarkable resilience.
