Ulsan, South Korea — Hyundai's influential labor union in South Korea initiated a three-day partial strike earlier this week, intensifying negotiations over future job security amidst the company's aggressive plans to deploy humanoid robots. This action, involving workers leaving shifts two hours early, resulted in four hours of lost productivity daily for the automaker, according to reports. The union's demands center on establishing safeguards before advanced automation potentially displaces human workers, a significant sticking point in ongoing wage talks.
Robot Integration Plans Spark Union Concern
Hyundai, having acquired a majority stake in Boston Dynamics in 2021 and deepening its involvement this year, views the Atlas robot as a finished product ready for real-world industrial application. The company has signaled plans to manufacture tens of thousands of these units, with initial deployment slated for its Savannah, Georgia plant by 2028. These robots are expected to handle "sequencing" tasks, placing small parts for assembly, before expanding to "heavy loads, repetitive motions and complex operations" by 2030, as reported by CNBC. This aggressive timeline fuels the South Korean union's push for pre-emptive agreements.
