Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company, has announced a significant expansion of its robotaxi service, adding three new U.S. cities to its operational map. The company confirmed on Tuesday its driverless taxis will soon be available in Denver, Colorado; San Diego, California; and Tampa, Florida. This move marks the introduction of Waymo's services to the state of Colorado for the first time.
Expanding Reach and Technology
The gradual rollout will increase Waymo's presence to 14 cities nationwide. Initially, dozens of vehicles will commence operations, with plans to scale up to hundreds over time. This expansion is particularly notable as it represents the first large-scale deployment of the 6th generation Waymo Driver system. Furthermore, the service territory will grow by approximately 150 square miles. For what it's worth, the Waymo Ojai, an electric robotaxi developed with Chinese firm Zeekr, will exclusively serve riders in Denver and San Diego, boasting a purpose-built design for autonomous travel.
